Operation Christmas Child
Students led by the S.V.P. Group at school sent off special shoe boxes this year for the Operation Christmas Child Appeal
Junior St Vincent de Paul Society
The recently formed junior section of the St Vincent de Paul Society has been busy of late. In the true spirit of the society, which was formed in the nineteenth century in Paris to help those in need, the pupils have rallied great support from their colleagues to fill 15 gift boxes for the Operation Christmas Child Appeal. Donations of small toys, toiletries, stationery, hats and gloves were allocated to boys and girls between the ages of 2-14. This superb effort was coordinated by the elected President of the group, Maisie Revell (8CO) and her band of helpers, three of whom, Owen Beck, Lauren Taylor and Chloe Morris, all 8CO, took the boxes to the local collection point at the Zion Methodist Chapel, where they were welcomed by Mrs Dorothy Green, who told them that their parcels will be going to children in Kurdistan.
On Saturday evening, 30 November, representatives from the SVP group distributed mince pies to the crowds at the ‘Big Switch-On’ in Norfolk Square.
The SVP group has plans to visit homes for the elderly, help out at local primary schools, do gardening for the elderly in the summer months, and to make an impact in the community by helping where they are needed. There are about 20 members, mostly Year 8 pupils, but new members are always welcome at 12.30 every Monday in the Chapel in Campion House, especially if they have new ideas for the group
Glossop Christmas Lights Switch on
Students will be out on the streets of Glossop again this year, handing out mince pies.
St Philip Howard Pay Respect
Every year a poppy wreath is laid at the cenotaph on behalf of the school. This year Mr Jordan was accompanied in this honour by Lucy and Chris, pictured above.
Parents Meeting 24/10/13
A parents meeting was held on Thursday 24th October at 7pm in the school hall to outline the current school situation and included an update to parents on our latest HMI visit along with our immediate plans to move the school forward. The meeting was led by Fr Greg Tobin the Chair of Governors who directed parents questions to the panel. A further meeting will be arranged before Christmas for the school to update parents on progress and parents to contribute to the direction of the school. If you were unable to attend the meeting but would like to contribute your concerns, or ideas on any matters, please E mail to Headteacher@st-philiphoward.derbyshire.sch.uk
At this time of the year it is always important to remind Parents of our uniform policy, which has not changed. We pride ourselves on our students’ appearance and our image within the community. Please see the uniform expectations on the reverse of the letter sent home 18/10/13 or in the school planner.
Progress and achievement are not possible if a student does not attend. As stated in previous letter, the school is no longer able to authorise holidays during school time. We will be working with the Education Welfare Officer who may issue fixed penalty notices for persistent poor attendance. We understand that this is the season of illness but urge you to ensure your child misses as little education as possible.
