Bishop Malcolm Introduces our Year of Faith
Saint Philip Howard pupils go in search of the "God Particle".
21 pupils and 2 staff from Saint Philip Howard School accompanied by a Derbyshire LEA Adviser had the opportunity to Visit the eminent scientific research centre, CERN near Geneva last week. At CERN in the Large Hadron Collider scientists have been attempting to prove the existence of the Higgs Boson by effectively trying to recreate the Big Bang. Pupils sat in the lecture theatre where just recently scientist announced they had the data that pointed to the existence of the sought after Higgs Boson dubbed the "God particle". Pupils learned how these conditions were recreated and had a guided tour around the facility with one of CERN's many scientists. In fact, we were lucky enough to stand outside the control room above the ATLAS detector where 100metres below particles are collided. The time spent at CERN allowed pupils to experience the importance of collaboration, seeing the many scientists from around the world working side by side. Pupils then had a day in the beautiful city of Geneva seeing the many amazing sights such as the 140 metre high water jet.
The whole trip was mind-boggling, amazing, huge and left all with a sense of awe and excitement knowing that we stand on the brink of a new era in understanding further the complex, intricate world in which we all live.
